Child Artist’s Future Is Creating Animal Portraits

Looking at both animal portrait painting and human portraiture, you would see that they are quite the same save for the fact that animals don’t like to pose. It takes a lot of hard work on the part of the artist to maintain the animal’s attention. An artist of Wilmington has chosen this field as her specialization. She belongs to the well known family, the Delawares Her grandfather has this collection of sea and landscape paintings which were actually famous. It is not shocking then to learn that the painter in this female artist came out at the age of 3.

Most of the time, she drew animals. By the time she was 10, she had her own show at the local library, and by the time she was 12 she was a children’s book illustrator. She studied all types of dancing with all widely known Philadelphia teachers. She continued to do solo dance for a good number of years, one of her most memorable performances being a death scene where she accidentally took a mouthful of kerosene from a lamp.

Painting portraits of dogs is what interests her most out of all the other animals she has made portraits of. There is just something so interesting about the way she begins her work on the dog’s portrait. As the owner helpfully tries to keep the dog still, she is already drawing several sketches on her sketch pad.

While she tries to find the best pose that would suit the dog, her pencil just seems to fly over her sketchpad. While she is doing this, she is talking to the dog, telling him he is beautiful and that he is a good dog. To hold the interest of the animal, she employs different props and sometimes even tidbits of food. In order to have photographs for her collection, she makes a request from the owner if she can duplicate photos of the dog that he might have. She determines the colors to use by collecting snips of hair from the dog, one each from its tail, ears and tummy. These snips are kept for each dog’s file.

Then comes the selection of a pose and a composition with a suitable background. The type of dog or animal determines the latter. She sat in a duck blind and took sketches of her surroundings for one portrait featuring a Chesapeake Bay retriever.

She says that animals can be judges, just like humans. One story that shows how true this was was when an American pointer snuck up behind an artist and then chewed up her painting. It was most likely a terrible painting if, because of his reaction, he had to be given serious medical treatment.

If she does portraits of beagles or bassets, she puts in a paw print along with the scenery and puts the kennel club’s identifying symbols on the back. With her dog to aid her, she even made abstract backgrounds. Sometimes, the animals don’t make it easy. Portrait painting stopped for the day when one model ran off with one of the female dogs. Ordinary as it may be, it just shows that the unusual can take place when an animal’s portrait is being made.
